Three partners have joined to create the NANoREG national partnership: VSB as the academia, providing integrated risk research and management and dissemination channel; IEM as the Czech leading toxicology laboratory; and ZUOVA, which brings competences of nanomaterials characterization and aerosols measurement and serves as an interface to industry. All three partners have long cooperated in the field of nanosafety within the framework of the Czech Technology Platform on Industrial Safety.

The VSB-Technical University of Ostrava (VSB) is a research university, founded in 1847 as a mining academy and transformed to the polytechnic type of university with strong research background. Contemporary, VSB is the third biggest technical university in the Czech Republic. VSB provides tertiary education at seven faculties and few trans-university studies, among them the first accredited nanotechnology study specialization in the Czech Republic and complex education in safety at the Faculty of Safety Engineering.

In NANoREG, three departments of VSB participate: Laboratory of Risk Research and Management is the leading laboratory in basic and applied research of safety, focused on chemical safety and risk management and communication; Nanotechnology Centre is the principal department concentrating nanotechnology and nanomaterial research activities at VSB; and Energy Research Centre provides certified testing of thermal processes, including particle measurement and characterization. All mentioned laboratories have wide experiences in international cooperation and have participated in several research projects.

VSB hosts the Czech Technology Platform on Industrial Safety ( It´s working group on nanotechnology safety is the core group of nanosafety research in the Czech Republic.

The Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM) is the leading institution in the Czech Republic in the analysis of toxic and health effects of the environmental pollution, cell biology, developmental toxicology, molecular epidemiology, cancer research, stem cells and nervous tissue regeneration. IEM is internationally recognized in these fields, and as such it was selected as an EU Center of Excellence (MEDIPRA). Currently, IEM consists of 10 departments and 2 independent laboratories. There are about more than 200 employees, including about 100 university graduates and more than 40 foreign students or visitors, working at the IEM.

Research in the Department of Genetic Ecotoxicology (DGE) concentrates mostly on the effects of air pollution on genetic material, on the mechanisms of changes induced by environmental factors. The DGE members developed several methods to assess possible toxic effects of particulate matter pollution, including nanoparticles, on human health.


Institute of Public Health Ostrava

The Institute of Public Health Ostrava (ZUOVA) is a facility established by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, providing a wide range of medical and laboratory services related to the protection of public health. The main activities of ZUOVA comprise determination and measurement of various components of living and working environment examination of general consumption articles and food characteristics and wide range of investigations in biological and clinical material. ZUOVA prepares data for public administration authorities acting in health protection. ZUOVA also monitors public state of health, living and working conditions, processes basic data for evaluation and management of health risks, participates in local programs of health promotion and protection. At the national level, ZUOVA participates in population health monitoring in relation to the environment and evaluates the selected parameters of the public health.
